Real Africa: Bringing Francophone Africa into the Classroom through Film
A Seminar for Teachers (NEW in 2005)
Montreal’s annual Vues d’Afrique Film Festival, the largest festival of African cinema in North America, constitutes a unique environment for learning about Francophone Africa and its rich filmic tradition. Designed for teachers of French or teachers of other subjects with intermediate-level French language skills, this seminar is an intensive introduction to Francophone Africa and African film. Its main goals are to: 1) provide pertinent background knowledge for viewing African films and using them in the classroom; 2) gain a deeper understanding of Francophone African cinema; and 3) lay the groundwork for a curriculum unit linked to a readily available Francophone film. The seminar will be co-taught by a specialist of African film and an anthropologist with long-term research experience in Francophone West Africa. Participants will receive tickets to some of the latest film and video produced in Africa and be able to engage directly with a filmmaker whose work they have seen.
